Prime Minister Rossen Jeliazkov assures Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis: All systems in Bulgaria are prepared to switch over to Euro

04.11.2025

All systems in Bulgaria are prepared to switch over to the Euro from 1 January 2026. We continue to work intensively to ensure a smooth, transparent and successful transition to the single European currency. This was stated by Prime Minister Rossen Jeliazkov at a bilateral meeting with the European Commissioner in charge of Economy and Productivity, Implementation and Simplification of Policies, Valdis Dombrovskis, held within the framework of the high-level conference "Bulgaria on the Doorstep of the Eurozone". The banking sector is fully prepared, including the process that began on 1 November - the initial supply of Euro banknotes and coins to banks, post offices and retailers, Rossen Jeliazkov said.

The Prime Minister stressed that the public awareness campaign that the cabinet launched together with all institutions in charge and in partnership with NGOs strengthened public confidence. On 8 July the Council approved the last three legal instruments needed for the adoption of the Euro and since then over 420 information sessions and conferences had been held with local authorities, citizens, businesses and vulnerable groups all over the country. Apart from the meetings, citizens received correct, complete and accurate information from the media and social networks about the transition period to the adoption of the single currency and about what to expect from 1 January 2026 onwards. The effect of these public measures was monitored by sociological surveys which clearly show the growth.

The European Commissioner for Economy and Productivity Valdis Dombrovskis expressed his satisfaction with the next big step that Bulgaria is taking with its accession to the Euro area. During the discussion he stressed that the adoption of the Euro brings enormous benefits to Bulgaria such as financial stability and sustainability and will lead to faster economic growth in the coming years.

During the discussion the Prime Minister and the European Commissioner agreed on the benefits of the adoption of the Euro for every Bulgarian citizen. Emphasis was laid on tourism and future travels from Bulgaria to Europe and from Europe to Bulgaria as there will no longer be a need for currency conversion and exchange fees will be eliminated nor there will be charges on each bank transfer operation.

The countering of distortions and allegations regarding the Euro was seen as a challenge that the government and the involved Bulgarian institutions cope with in an excellent way. "The confidence of citizens was undermined by anti-European parties that disseminated misleading information and claims and even inspired fears. We managed to counteract this successfully, with honesty and with transparent, true and easily obtainable information," Prime Minister Rossen Jeliazkov said and noted that sociological surveys prove the wisdom and maturity of Bulgarian society as trust in the measures of the cabinet is 7 percentage points over skepticism.
