SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Equality California, the nation's largest LGBTQ+ statewide civil rights organization, released the following statement from Executive Director Tony Hoang in response to the Trump Administration's Department of Education announcing that California violated Title IX by allowing transgender youth to participate in school sports:
"The U.S. Department of Education's 'findings' are a dangerous distortion of Title IX and a direct attack on transgender youth in California. Let's be clear: this isn't about fairness in sports and never has been - it's about a federal administration weaponizing civil rights laws to target transgender students and force California to comply with their hateful anti-transgender agenda.
Transgender youth belong in our schools, on our teams, and in our communities - without apology and without exception. California has long led the nation in protecting LGBTQ+ students, and we will not stand by and allow the Department of Education to roll back those longstanding protections based on hate and misinformation.
We call on the California Department of Education and the California Interscholastic Federation to reject these demands, and for Governor Newsom and Attorney General Bonta to stand firm in defending our values and our laws. We will not be bullied into erasing transgender youth from public life - not in California, not anywhere."
