The Hampton Roads Sanitary District, HRSD, will be conducting sanitary sewer smoke testing Monday, November 10 - Friday, November 14, 2025, weather permitting in neighborhoods near the intersection of South Military Highway and George Washington Highway. See the map for more detailed information on locations and scheduling. Smoke testing involves dispersing of smoke into the sewer lines in order to locate holes where groundwater and/or storm water may enter. The test is performed block to block and will only involve about ½ hour at each residence site. A notice will be placed on the residence door a few days before the testing begins.
The smoke is relatively harmless but may be irritating to nasal passages. If smoke is detected in the house during the test, open the doors or windows to let the smoke clear out. Any smoke irritation will be temporary. If smoke enters your home during testing, please notify the contractor at 757-944-0870. Smoke inside your home can help identify plumbing connections that need to be repaired.
If you have questions, you may contact HRSD Public Information Specialist at 757-460-7000 or send an email to [email protected].
