Sterling Heights Unveils Community Garden and Park Enhancements

It's officially planting season in Sterling Heights, as the City celebrated the grand opening of its brand-new Community Garden at James C. Nelson Park on May 1. This garden marks a significant addition to the city's expanding collection of green spaces and a major milestone in its long-term sustainability efforts.

The Community Garden is part of a larger series of improvements to James C. Nelson Park, which now includes more than 115 garden beds and over 32,000 square feet of improvements. The enhancements are designed to promote public health, environmental education, and meaningful engagement for residents of all ages and abilities.

In addition to the Community Garden, the park now features a Children's Garden, Butterfly Conservatory, native planting areas, bee apiary, microforest, and newly installed benches that serve as public art. These additions work together to enhance local biodiversity, provide natural habitat, and offer welcoming spaces for recreation and reflection. New seating, ADA-compliant pathways, and educational signage further enhance accessibility and learning opportunities throughout the site.

"These enhancements reflect our long-term commitment to building a more sustainable Sterling Heights," said Mayor Michael C. Taylor. "By expanding green space, supporting pollinators, and encouraging residents to grow their own food, we're creating an environment that not only benefits our community today, but also protects and strengthens it for future generations."

The project was made possible in part through American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding and supports several key goals outlined in the City's Sustainability Plan. These include strengthening local food systems, improving air and soil quality, managing stormwater more effectively, and encouraging more active and connected lifestyles.

The new improvements were intentionally designed to evolve with the community's needs and serve as a resource for learning and connection. The Community Garden and surrounding amenities will support future programming such as gardening workshops, school field trips, volunteer opportunities, and more.

"The improvements at Nelson Park are designed to be as engaging as they are practical," said Kyle Langlois, director of Parks and Recreation. "From hands-on gardening programs to youth education and quiet moments in nature, these new amenities will serve residents of all ages and abilities. It's about building a park that grows with our community and offers something meaningful for everyone."

Community members can now reserve garden beds, participate in programs, and explore the new amenities at James C. Nelson Park. To learn more, visit sterlingheights.gov/communitygarden.
