NEW POLLING: Legislation to Address 3D-Printed Ghost Guns and DIY Machine Guns Have Overwhelming Statewide Support Among New York Voters

Polling Released by Everytown for Gun Safety Shows Bipartisan Mandate for Action Following Governor Hochul's State of the State Proposals to Crack Down on Emerging Gun Threats

ALBANY, N.Y. -Today, Everytown for Gun Safety and its grassroots network, the New York chapters of Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action, unveiled new polling showing overwhelming support among New York voters for new measures to combat 3D-printed ghost guns and DIY machine guns.

The poll, conducted by SurveyUSA, found that 74% of New Yorkers support requiring 3D printers to be equipped with software that blocks the illegal printing of firearms. Furthermore, 75% of voters support requiring gun manufacturers to design their pistols so they cannot be easily converted into fully automatic weapons.

The release of this data coincides with Governor Kathy Hochul's 2026 State of the State address earlier today, in which she proposed a comprehensive package to address the "Plastic Pipeline" of 3D printed ghost guns and the proliferation of "Glock switches" and convertible pistols across the state. These DIY machine guns represent a significant threat to public safety. The Governor's plan includes the policies referenced above, plus other measures to prevent the spread of digital code used to illegally manufacture firearms and to track recoveries of 3D-printed guns used to commit crimes.

"New Yorkers are sending a clear message: technology should be used to advance our society and keep us safe, not to enable gun traffickers and make it easy to build illegal machine guns," said Shari Maurer, a volunteer with the New York chapter of Moms Demand Action. "For too long, some manufacturers have looked the other way while their products are converted into weapons of war with simple, 3D-printed parts. Governor Hochul is proposing proactive safety standards to stop this at the source, and this polling proves that voters across the political spectrum support these common-sense requirements to hold the gun industry accountable for their role in worsening our epidemic of gun violence."

Toplines from the Poll Include:

  • Broad Consensus on 3D Printing Safeguards: 74% of respondents support requiring 3D printers to be equipped with software that prevents the illegal printing of firearms and components.
  • Support for Safer Gun Designs: 75% of voters support requiring gun manufacturers to design pistols so they cannot be easily turned into a fully automatic DIY machine gun in minutes using common household tools.
  • A Bipartisan Mandate: 87% of respondents said state legislators should make gun violence prevention a priority during the 2026 session, with majorities of Democrats, Independents, and Republicans all supporting stronger gun laws.
  • Electoral Impact: 65% of respondents said they would be more likely to support a candidate who supports strengthening gun safety laws, while only 23% were more likely to support a candidate who opposes more gun restrictions.

Governor Hochul's proposals address the rapid evolution technologies that have been exploited to illegally manufacture guns. Law enforcement across New York state has seen a surge in pistols modified with Glock switches. These are illegal devices that allow a handgun to fire at a rate of up to 1,200 rounds per minute. These modifications are enabled by manufacturers who continue to sell convertible pistols, and by the ease of 3D printing illegal conversion devices at home.

The proposed legislation aligns with measures previously introduced by Senator Zellnor Myrie and Assemblymember Michaelle Solages (S.399-A / A.199-A). This legislation would require new handguns sold in New York to meet basic safety standards by requiring that they are designed in a way that prevents easy conversion into machine guns, which is a model recently enacted in California.

The survey was conducted by SurveyUSA among 1,000 likely 2026 voters across New York State from December 12 through December 16, 2025.

In an average year in New York, 1,003 people die by guns, and 2,841 are wounded. Gun violence costs New York $11.4 billion each year, of which $301.2 million is paid by taxpayers. More information about gun violence in New York is available here.
