Babiš to Spajić: EU enlargement process finally visible and measurable - Montenegro to join the EU as soon as possible
The EU enlargement process has finally become visible and measurable in the case of Montenegro, it was stated at the meeting between Prime Minister Milojko Spajić and Prime Minister of the Czech Republic Andrej Babiš.
The meeting noted that Montenegro and the Czech Republic enjoy good and friendly relations, based on close historical and cultural ties, as well as a strong alliance within NATO.
By deciding to open an Embassy of Montenegro in Prague, the Government of Montenegro has demonstrated its commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and deepening economic cooperation with the Czech Republic, Prime Minister Spajić stated.
The Prime Minister expressed his gratitude for the strong support provided by the Czech Republic to Montenegro's European integration, particularly in the forthcoming period in which Montenegro requires additional political and expert assistance, as well as for the Czech Republic's engagement within the informal group of EU Member States "Friends of the Western Balkans".
Prime Minister Spajić emphasized that this is a year of multiple significance for Montenegro's progress - a year in which the country marks two decades since the restoration of independence, completes the closure of negotiation chapters, and hosts major international initiatives, including the EU-Western Balkans Summit; assumes the presidency of the Berlin Process and the Western Balkans Fund; and will chair the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe from November 2026 to May 2027.
Prime Minister Spajić presented the plan to close all remaining EU negotiation chapters by the end of this year, as well as the intensive work of the executive and legislative branches, with the involvement of all segments of society, in fulfilling the European agenda.
The importance of enhancing economic cooperation between Montenegro and the Czech Republic was underscored, with the conclusion that there is significant potential for projects of mutual interest in the fields of energy, renewable energy sources, railway infrastructure and the wood-processing industry.
Satisfaction was expressed with the air connectivity between the two countries, as well as with cooperation in the railway sector, accompanied by the expectation that Czech companies will continue to participate in projects related to the reconstruction, modernisation and maintenance of Montenegro's railway system.
As Prime Minister Spajić noted, Montenegro pays particular attention to strengthening bilateral relations with neighbouring countries and to regional cooperation, emphasizing that EU enlargement represents a historic opportunity for the entire Western Balkans region.
The Prime Minister of the Czech Republic extended an invitation to Prime Minister Spajić to pay an official visit to Prague in the coming period.
