Anaheim, CA - Today, U.S. Senator Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) was joined by local Orange County leaders to call out President Donald Trump's ongoing attacks on California health care, including crucial services provided by Planned Parenthood, and highlight Congressional Republicans' rejection of legislation to avert massive increases in health care premiums and avert a looming government shutdown.

Schiff emphasized how the Republican budget passed earlier this summer blocks federal funding for Planned Parenthood - eliminating all Medicaid coverage for the critical services and preventative care they provide for millions. At the Planned Parenthood of Orange & San Bernardino Counties, more than 130,000 Medicaid patients are at risk of losing care.

Schiff was joined by Ramona Thomas, General Counsel of Planned Parenthood of Orange and San Bernardino Counties, California State Senator Tom Umberg, and Orange County Board of Supervisor Vicente Sarmiento.

"With Trump and GOP leadership refusing to talk, we are on the verge of a destructive shutdown. Their massive cuts to Medicaid and the ACA have left us with an impending crisis in health care - with millions of Americans about to see a tremendous increase in their premiums and clinics like Planned Parenthood struggling to continue providing care to Orange County families. A family of four in Anaheim could see their health insurance go up by almost a thousand dollars a month. I hope the President and Republicans in Congress will come back to the table and end the crisis. Because if they don't, millions of Americans will suffer," said Senator Schiff.

"Healthcare is not a partisan issue-it is a lifeline for millions of Californians. With federal leaders refusing to act, families in Orange County and across our state face higher costs, delayed care and serious risks to their health," said California State Senator Umberg. "We stand together to protect access to affordable healthcare and ensure no one has to choose between treatment and basic needs."

"Instead of issuing threats around the potential for a government shutdown, the administration should be focused on improving the issues directly affecting our communities, including healthcare," said Supervisor Sarmiento. "Our residents, especially seniors and people with disabilities, are already fearful due to the soon-to-be-implemented Medicaid cuts from this administration that reduce access to services they depend on and deserve."

Schiff highlighted Republicans' rejection of legislation that would avert massive increases in health care premiums and a looming government shutdown.

Last week, Senate Republicans voted unanimously to reject legislation put forward by Schiff and Senate Democrats to reverse catastrophic health care cuts and prevent millions more from facing spikes in their premiums next year.

President Donald Trump canceled a meeting with Democratic leaders that Democrats had demanded with the goal of averting the government shutdown looming at the end of this month. Echoing the President's refusal to negotiate, Congressional Republicans also skipped town rather than work with Democrats on legislation to avert these health care cost spikes and stave off a shutdown.
