The City of Green Bay reminds residents that October 1st marks the final day to purchase 2025 dog or cat licenses. After this date, the City Clerk's office will close license sales to reconcile accounts and prepare tags for the upcoming year.
Important Dates for Pet Owners
Current 2025 license holders will automatically receive renewal letters in late November for their 2026 licenses. New 2026 dog and cat licenses will become available starting December 1, 2025.
Licensing Requirements and Fees
Wisconsin State law and Green Bay Municipal Code Chapter 6 require all cats and dogs five months of age or older to be licensed annually. Current rabies vaccination certificates from a licensed veterinarian are required - rabies tags alone are not acceptable proof.
2026 License Fees:
• $15 for spayed or neutered cats and dogs
• $30 for intact cats and dogs
Pet owners who renew after March 31st will be charged a $5 late fee. The late fee applies only to renewal licenses, not first-time pet licenses.
Why License Your Pet
Beyond legal compliance, licensing provides crucial identification to help reunite lost pets with their families quickly. Licensed pets that become stray are more likely to be returned to their owners promptly.
