SACRAMENTO- Assemblymember Dawn Addis (D-Morro Bay), Chair of the Budget Subcommittee No. 1 on Health, issued the following statement on the Legislature's passage of the 2026-27 Budget:
"Amid the largest federal healthcare funding rollbacks in our nation's history, this budget supports the things Californians are asking for and creates a more affordable California, including funding for community hospitals, women's health services, indigent care, Medi-Cal, Covered California, and much more," said Addis. "I thank our Speaker, my colleagues, and most importantly the California public for advocating for a budget that doubles down on healthcare as well as critical investments in education, childcare, and public safety."
The 2026-27 Budget Bill, AB 109, includes continued support for dental care, adds $110 million to lower healthcare premiums, and provides $190 million for distressed hospital loans. It also invests in public education, childcare, paid family leave for teachers, victim services, anti-human trafficking efforts, wildfire prevention, food assistance programs, and other essential services for California families.
With the Trump Administration's actions and Congressional measures such as House Resolution 1, California lawmakers face a federal deficit of nearly $30 billion. AB 109, through new revenue measures, preserves critical state programs while increasing the state's reserves by more than $13 billion.
Assemblymember Addis, in her capacity as Chair of Budget Subcommittee No. 1 on Health, has conducted nine public hearings since January and oversees $256 billion in total funding for healthcare and public health programs.
Per the California Constitution, the Assembly and Senate must deliver their budget bill to the Governor by midnight on June 15th.
AB 109 awaits consideration by Governor Newsom.
