The City of Bloomington's 2025-26 fall leaf collection program is now underway. Public Works crews will continue collecting leaves citywide through December 31, weather permitting. Residents are encouraged to review this year's guidelines to help ensure safe and efficient collection throughout the community.
During this seasonal program, crews use leaf vacuums and brush equipment to move continuously throughout Bloomington. Residents can track progress in real time using the interactive Leaf Collection Map, which will be updated as crews move through neighborhoods.
"We know Illinois weather can't make up its mind - 70 degrees one day, snow flurries the next - so our crews are working hard to collect leaves while the weather is still on our side," said Mose Rickey, Director of Public Works. "Keeping leaves behind the curb and separate from other materials helps us move faster, no matter what Mother Nature throws at us."
During fall leaf collection, crews can only collect leaves, and they must be placed in loose piles behind the curb, not in the street. Piles should be no more than three feet high. Leaves cannot be placed in biodegradable bags, trash cans, or any type of container during this period. Brush, garden trimmings, pumpkins, bulk waste, and other debris must stay separate. Any piles mixed with other materials will not be collected, and crews will place a flag at the location indicating the pile is unserviceable.
Leaves placed in the street cannot be collected and can create hazards. Leaf piles in the roadway can block storm drains, cause sewer backups, encourage children to play in traffic, and create dangerous conditions for motorists. Covering manholes, hydrants, or utility valves with leaves also creates safety risks for crews and can delay service. Any issues caused by leaves placed in the street are the responsibility of the homeowner.
If improperly prepared piles require collection, they may still be removed, but the resident will be billed for the full cost of the collection. Some exceptions apply.
Rapid leaf drops, heavy rain, or snow events may temporarily delay collection. Updates will be shared on the City website and social media.
