On Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at approximately 1:50 a.m., officers assigned to PPB's North Precinct responded to reports of an individual trespassing on private property in the 4100 block of Northeast Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard. When they arrived, officers asked the adult male to leave the premises, but he refused. As officers attempted to take the suspect into custody, he became combative and assaulted two officers. Ultimately, the officers were able to get control of the suspect and place him under arrest.

PPB is releasing some video of the incident.

The officers went to a local hospital for treatment of their non-life-threatening injuries. Out of respect for the officers' privacy, PPB is not releasing the extent of those injuries.

"I'm relieved both officers are expected to recover from their injuries," Chief Bob Day said. "Every time our officers respond to a call or attempt to take someone into custody, they face the very real possibility of violence. Incidents like this are a stark reminder of the risks they accept every day to protect our community, and I'm grateful for their commitment to public safety."

The suspect, identified as Yimer Funez-Cruz, 23, of Portland, was checked by paramedics before being transported to the Multnomah County Detention Center (MCDC) and lodged on the following charges: Assault of a Public Safety Officer (two counts), Assault in the Fourth Degree (two counts), Assault in the Second Degree, Attempted Theft in the First Degree, Attempt Felon in Possession of a Restricted Weapon, and Trespass in the Second Degree.

PPB's Major Crimes Unit is investigating this case. Anyone with information, who has not talked with police, is asked to submit a tip. The case number is 26-196482.
