SUNY Cortland's student-run radio station, WSUC 90.5 FM The Dragon, will celebrate 50 years on the air to recognize National College Radio Day on Friday, Oct. 2. An event-filled day will feature special programming and several opportunities for current students to learn about the history of the university's radio station in Cornish-Van Hoesen Hall.
From 9 a.m. until 4 p.m., WSUC will feature special programming, guest alumni DJs and additional on-air appearances by radio station alumni. The broadcast will take place in the Penny Seltzman Springer '74 Radio Studio in Room C103. Residents can tune in directly to 90.5 FM. An online audio stream also will be available.
The celebration will continue from noon to 1 p.m. during a reception in the Cornish-Van Hoesen Hall C-Wing, followed by an alumni panel from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Cinema Screening Room.
Alumni panel participants include Emily Cittadino Hansen '08, who currently serves as a professional learning facilitator at Integrated Community Alternatives Network (ICAN), and Lisa Baumgartner '09, senior territory manager for immunology and dermatology at Eli Lilly. The panel will also feature a message from Rob Galm '17, who serves as a content producer for ESPN.
The National College Radio Day celebration continues a series of events to celebrate the station's 50th anniversary. In July, WSUC alumni gathered at Alumni Reunion. Hosted by Michael Flaster '78, WSUC's first station manager, that celebration highlighted the history of the radio outlet and the transition from WCSU-AM to WSUC-FM. The Cornish-Van Hoesen Hall C-Wing also completed a multiyear $27 million renovation in January, bringing several facility enhancements for the Communication and Media Studies Department, including a state-of-the-art Springer Radio Studio.
Spaces remain available for alumni interested in participating in either the alumni panel or making an on-air appearance. Contact Caroline Kaltefleiter, distinguished teaching professor of communication and media studies, at [email protected] for more information.
