DNC Statement on the First Day of Federal Hearings on Texas Republicans’ Rigged Congressional Maps Arrow

Texas Republicans' maps represent a blatant disenfranchisement of Black and brown voters

Today, federal hearings began on the legality of Texas Republicans' rigged congressional maps that dilute Black and brown voices. Texas Republicans passed these maps to avoid accountability for congressional Republicans passing Trump's tax scam, ripping away health care from hundreds of thousands of Texans.

A reminder: Texas Democrats fought valiantly against this passage, breaking quorum for two weeks and enduring bomb threats, threats against their families, frivolous lawsuits, and unlawful detainment.

Now their fight turns to the courts, where these hearings began today.

In response to the start of the federal hearings to determine the legality of the Texas Republican gerrymander, DNC Chair Ken Martin issued the following statement:

"Texas Democrats continue to fight valiantly for fair representation, and now their fight turns to the courts. At the behest of Donald Trump, Texas Republicans passed a rigged congressional map that clearly dilutes the power of Black and brown voters across Texas. This is an illegal power grab by Trump and Greg Abbott, and the court should promptly invalidate it. Texas Democrats ignited a spark across the country to fight back against Republican cheating, and the DNC and Democrats across the country have answered their call. We're fighting for democracy every step of the way."
