Cary, NC - Residents and visitors are invited to celebrate National Trails Day on June 6 by exploring more than 100 miles of Cary's greenways and trails that connect people to nature, recreation, public art, and destinations throughout the community. As one of North Carolina's most extensive municipal greenway systems, Cary's trails support recreation, wellness, environmental stewardship, and active transportation for people of all ages and abilities.
Observed annually across the country, National Trails Day encourages people to get outside, discover local trails, and support the conservation and stewardship of natural spaces. In Cary, the occasion highlights a greenway system that has grown over more than four decades into an important community asset that connects residents to parks, schools, neighborhoods, businesses, cultural destinations, and gathering spaces throughout Cary.
"National Trails Day is an invitation to discover something new," said Transportation Director Cassie Schumacher-Georgopoulos. "Whether it's your first visit to a Cary greenway or your hundredth, these trails are an alternate transportation system that connect people to nature, recreation, art, and one another in ways that make our community stronger."
Black Creek Greenway and White Oak Creek Greenway form the backbone of Cary's trail network, offering scenic routes for walking, running, biking, and everyday exploration. Along the way, residents can experience wooded landscapes, wetlands, boardwalks, public art, artistic placemaking features, and connections to some of Cary's most popular destinations, including Downtown Cary Park and Fred G. Bond Metro Park.
Greenways By the Numbers
Residents are invited to run, walk, roll, or stroll and share where the greenways take them by tagging @caryncgov on Instagram and using #CaryNC. As they explore, Cary encourages everyone to help keep the greenways safe and welcoming by staying alert, sharing the trail, following posted signage, and respecting fellow trail users.
