Prevention and management of foot-and-mouth disease in Cyprus

Prevention and management of foot-and-mouth disease in Cyprus

27.3.2026

Question for written answer E-001303/2026
to the Commission
Rule 144
Fidias Panayiotou (NI)

In Cyprus, the foot-and-mouth disease situation poses a constant threat to the animal population and rural economy of the island. Given that the prevention and control measures in occupied northern Cyprus may be less stringent or differ from those in force in the Republic of Cyprus, can the Commission say:

  • 1.Does it intend to strengthen the surveillance and early detection systems for foot-and-mouth disease in Cyprus, in order to ensure that any outbreaks in occupied northern Cyprus do not endanger the animal population of the Republic of Cyprus?
  • 2.What measures is it monitoring and implementing to ensure that the management of the disease reduces its risk of spreading across the island?
