An award-winning $14 million wastewater upgrade is securing West Maui's water future. The Lahaina Wastewater Reclamation Facility (WWRF) R-1 Improvements Project was honored as the Hawaii Society of Professional Engineers Project of the Year 2026, recognizing its innovation, sustainability and community impact. By transforming aging 1970s infrastructure into a reliable recycled water source, the project is strengthening water security and reducing environmental impact, supporting a region navigating drought, climate pressures and wildfire recovery.
The upgraded facility now delivers a consistent supply of high-quality recycled water for golf courses, resorts, public parks and future agricultural use, reducing demand on Maui's limited potable water resources.
By stabilizing treatment processes and eliminating damaging flow swings, the system produces dependable effluent that supports both daily operations and long-term recovery efforts across West Maui.
"This project is a meaningful step forward. By improving the reliability of our recycled water system, we're better equipped to serve our community, protect our natural resources and plan for the future," says County of Maui Wastewater Capital Improvement Program Manager Juan Rivera.
The project significantly reduces reliance on injection wells, while protecting groundwater and coastal ecosystems, advancing Maui's sustainability goals.
By repurposing existing basins, channels and infrastructure, we were able to minimize construction waste and reduce the project's carbon footprint, while also lowering capital costs. This approach turned underutilized assets into a high-performing system that will continue delivering long-term operational savings.
"We did more than upgrade a facility - we unlocked the value of infrastructure that was already there, making it more efficient, sustainable and resilient," emphasizes Jacobs Vice President, Derek Ono.
Highly variable flows once disrupted treatment and damaged equipment. Today, advanced process modeling and integrated controls keep the system running smoothly, while a multi-layered automation system synchronizes pumps, valves and sensors, creating a smarter, more adaptable facility.
