Bellingham Fire Department Training on August 4, 6, 11, and 13

July 29, 2026

The Bellingham Fire Department has been coordinating with Western Washington University over the past several months to conduct independent training exercises on campus this summer. Training is scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday of the first two weeks of August (August 4, 6, 11, and 13) and will take place from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. each day.

The primary training location will be the tunnel system beneath Arntzen Hall, with some related activity near the Engineering Technology and Environmental Studies buildings.

Throughout the training period, BFD will have approximately five apparatus on campus and will be rotating crews and shifts through the training exercise.

Apparatus are expected be staged in the areas identified in the photo and positioned to avoid interfering with university operations or permitted parking. BFD personnel will also post "Fire Department Training" signage throughout the training areas. For those interested, the exercise will focus on the extrication of an injured individual from non-confined space designated areas.

Monica Jackson, interim senior director Risk, Safety, and Resilience, expects to be onsite or within the training area for much of the scheduled training; however, there may be periods when Jackson am not present. As the primary WWU point of contact for BFD and these training activities, please do not hesitate to reach out to Jackson with any questions, concerns or issues that arise during the training sessions.

Additionally, if you are aware of any new operational concerns, scheduling conflicts, or other considerations related to the planned dates, times, or locations, please let Jackson know as soon as possible so they can be addressed proactively.
