WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congresswoman Sarah Elfreth (MD-03) released the following statement on the October 7th anniversary.
"Today marks two years since the people of Israel experienced the worst terror attack in their nation's history. The assault, abduction, and execution of Israeli citizens and tourists carried out by Hamas on that day claimed the lives of more than 1,200 people, while 254 people, including 12 Americans, were taken hostage. The loss of life and heartbreak of that day have stayed with me - especially as 48 hostages, including 2 Americans, are still being held in captivity.
"While negotiations to end the war resume in Cairo, I urge all parties to stay at the table and negotiate a ceasefire agreement. On this devastating anniversary, it is clear that such an agreement is the clearest path forward for all remaining hostages to be reunited with their families, an end to the dire situation in Gaza, the disarmament of Hamas, and a lasting peace for all in the region.
"As in years past, I'll be spending today with the Jewish community here in Maryland's Third District. Having sat with and mourned with the families of hostages, I have seen firsthand the civilian cost of this war. My thoughts and prayers remain with these families who have endured more than most of us could even imagine, as well as those who have lost their lives over the last two years. May their memory be a blessing."
