NEWTON COUNTY, GA - Newton County government offices are closed Friday, Jan. 10, due to the predicted winter storm expected to arrive early in the morning.
According to a briefing by the National Weather Service Thursday afternoon, Newton County could be impacted with up to 1 inch of snow/sleet, up to a quarter of an inch of ice due to freezing rain, and 30 mile-per-hour wind gusts. These conditions can lead to hazardous roadways, downed trees and possible power outages.
The winter storm is predicted to arrive in Newton County in the early hours of Friday with snow or sleet beginning around 6 a.m. followed by freezing rain. Temperatures are not anticipated to rise above freezing until after 1 p.m. Saturday.
Newton County's emergency personnel and essential departments will continue to work throughout the storm.
Newton County encourages the public to remain off the roadways. If it is necessary to travel, please do so with caution and anticipate icy conditions. Travel impacts are expected to occur after quickly precipitation due to temperatures being below freezing.
Public Works crews began spraying a brine solution on roadways Thursday afternoon and have salt trucks stationed near highly-traveled roads and roads essential to emergency personnel to treat roads soon after the precipitation concludes.
