CARBONDALE, Ill. - The orchestral talents of Southern Illinois University Carbondale students and faculty return to the stage on Tuesday, Oct. 15.

The SIU String Orchestra will perform two beautiful string serenades by Pytor Tchaikovsky and Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari at 7 p.m. in Shryock Auditorium. The orchestra features about 30 members and includes Michael Barta, violin professor at the SIU School of Music, as concertmaster.

Rossana Cauti, assistant professor of practice and director of SIU String Orchestras, returns for her second year conducting the string orchestra. The pieces performed will include masterpieces composed in the late 1800s. Each composer brings influence from his home - Tchaikovsky from Russia and Wolf-Ferrari from Germany and Italy.

The repertoire is:

  • String Serenade, Op. 48 by Tchaikovsky.
  • Serenade for Strings by Wolf-Ferrari.

SIU Youth Orchestra performs Nov. 16

On Nov. 16, the SIU Youth Orchestra will return with more exciting music from the young energetic musicians. This orchestra features almost 30 young violinists, violists and cellists from the Southern Illinois region. This fall, the students will present music by Karl Jenkins, Norman Leyden and Arturo Marquez.

The performance is from 2-4 p.m. in Shryock Auditorium.

The SIU Youth Orchestra functions as the pre-college division of the SIU String Orchestra. Since Cauti founded the youth orchestra in 2021, each year has seen tremendous growth in both numbers and the musical abilities of the students. Auditions are open twice a year, and applicants can inquire about more information at [email protected] or [email protected].

Both concerts are free and open to the public.
