WASHINGTON D.C. - Today, Rep. Dale Strong (R-AL), chairman of the Subcommittee on Emergency Management and Technology, announced a hearing for next Wednesday, May 21, to assess security measures and federal, state, local, and private-sector coordination efforts for mass gathering events.
"Communities across America are preparing to host several mass-gathering events which will attract spectators from around the world who are relying on our nation's top-notch security to ensure they have a safe and enjoyable experience," Chairman Strong said . "With decades of experience as an EMT and volunteer firefighter, I know firsthand that securing mass-spectator events requires extensive coordination between state and local law enforcement, the private sector, and all levels of government. I look forward to discussing how we can improve these efforts to identify potential threats and shore up our nation's security ahead of upcoming high-profile national and international events that will be held on U.S. soil."

BACKGROUND:
On May 6, 2025, House Committee on Homeland Security Chairman Mark E. Green, MD (R-TN) and Vice Chairman Michael McCaul (R-TX) announced the establishment of the "Task Force on Enhancing Security for Special Events in the United States," which will conduct oversight of security preparations for major upcoming international events, including the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, the FIFA World Cup in 2026, the FIFA Club World Cup 2025, the 2025 Ryder Cup, and the United States' 250th anniversary in 2026.
On April 8, 2025, Rep. Carlos Gimenez (R-FL), chairman of the Subcommittee on Transportation and Maritime Security, held a hearing to examine public- and private-sector efforts to secure and improve the U.S. travel system ahead of major international events, such as the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Summer Olympics.
On February 3, 2025, Chairman Strong led a bipartisan congressional delegation to New Orleans, Louisiana, to see security preparations for Super Bowl LIX events.
