The President: One year after synchronization, the Baltic energy system is operating stably and safely

On Monday, President Gitanas Nausėda met with representatives of the energy community and congratulated them on the Baltic Energy Independence Day. The meeting focused on the operation of the Baltic States' electricity systems one year after synchronization with the continental European networks, measures to strengthen energy security, and projects aimed at protecting regional infrastructure.

"Exactly one year ago, together with the leaders of the Baltic States, Poland, and the European Commission, we witnessed a historic event-the synchronization of the Baltic States' electricity systems with continental Europe. This decision cemented Lithuania's energy independence and became an example of successful regional cooperation across Europe," the President said.

One year after synchronization, the energy system of the Baltic States is operating stably and safely. The measures implemented as part of the synchronization project have strengthened the region's energy system, increased its resilience, and created conditions for more rapid development of local electricity generation from renewable energy sources.

This year also marks another important milestone in the energy sector: ten years since the launch of the NordBalt and LitPol Link electricity links. These projects transformed Lithuania's electricity market, ensured diversification of imports, and contributed to lower prices.

"Energy independence is not a given-it must be constantly defended. Today, energy resilience is a matter of national security," the President emphasized.

The meeting also addressed a project of critical energy infrastructure protection of the Baltic States and Poland, for which the European Commission allocated €113 million in funding on 27 January 2026. This decision is a direct result of the regional leadership initiated by the President. At a meeting with the leaders of the Baltic States, Poland, and the European Commission a year ago, he highlighted the need to continue regional cooperation in the protection of critical energy infrastructure. Within less than a year, the initiative was assessed by the European Commission and funding was allocated.

President Nausėda thanked the European Commission for its political and financial support and expressed hope that special attention would also be given to the protection of critical infrastructure in the next multiannual financial framework.

The Head of State also noted that in 2025 Europe took historic steps towards energy independence, including the decision to completely phase out Russian gas by 2027-a step Lithuania had already taken in 2022.

The meeting was attended by Minister of Energy Žygimantas Vaičiūnas, Minister of the Interior Vladislavas Kondratovičius, Chairman of the National Energy Regulatory Council Renatas Pocius, Head of the Public Security Service Viktoras Grabauskas, Head of the European Commission Representation in Lithuania Marius Vaščega, as well as executives of energy companies: Rokas Masiulis, CEO of Litgrid; Donatas Matelionis, Head of the System Management Department at Litgrid; Darius Šilenskis, CEO of KN Energies; Mindaugas Keizeris, Head of EPSO-G Group; and Asta Sungailienė, Head of Ignitis Gamyba.
