On 23 January, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, Kęstutis Budrys, met with representatives of the Tatar community of Lithuania. The Minister expressed an interest in the current affairs of the community, discussed its contribution to the public life of Lithuania, the Ukraine peace talks and the situation of Crimean Tatars in the country fighting Russian aggression.
Community representatives expressed concern over the plight of the Crimean Tatar population under Russian occupation and the lack of attention given to this topic in the ongoing peace talks.
"Lithuania persistently raises the issue of Crimean Tatars in all international organisations. We have a painful experience of the Soviet occupation and are well aware of the importance of a pro-active policy of non-recognition of the annexation," Budrys said.
Lithuania's top diplomat also emphasised the close historical connection of the Tatar community with the development of Lithuanian statehood and its contribution to strengthening tolerance, cultural diversity values and the unity of society.
The Minister invited the Tatar community to submit proposals on national and religious topics for the programme of events accompanying the Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The dialogue between the European Union and religious communities is enshrined in the Treaty of Lisbon.
