Emergency Preparedness Week: Learn About Local Risks and Be Prepared

Bruce County invites you to learn how to stay safe and prepared during Emergency Preparedness Week, happening May 4 to 10, 2025. This national awareness initiative provides communities with an opportunity to learn about local risks and make sure they are prepared when emergencies strike.

"Being prepared is everyone's responsibility," says Ray Lux, Bruce County's emergency management coordinator. "Emergency Preparedness Week gives us all a chance to learn what we need to know and do to protect ourselves, our families and our communities when faced with an emergency situation."

Know Local Risks

Each municipality in Bruce County has identified which hazards pose the greatest risk to their specific area. Knowing these potential emergencies helps communities be better prepared.

For Bruce County as a whole, the top four identified hazards are:

  • Tornado
  • Severe Winter Weather
  • Cyber Attack
  • Power Outage

Understanding these risks allows residents to take appropriate steps to prepare themselves and their families for these specific emergency situations.

"We're inviting everyone to explore emergency preparedness by creating their own emergency plans and kits," adds Lux. "These simple steps can make a significant difference in how well individuals and families navigate through challenging circumstances."

Take Action

  • Create a family emergency plan including meeting locations and communication strategies.
  • Prepare an emergency kit with essential supplies to last at least 72 hours.
  • Stay informed about potential risks in your area.
