LOS ANGELES - Mayor Karen Bass' Office yesterday helped 32 Angelenos move from the streets and into secure, stable housing through action by her Inside Safe program in South LA. City crews cleared an encampment in South Central, and the sidewalk was quickly back in use, with neighbors biking and running through the space that earlier in the morning had been filled with tents, debris, and personal belongings. B-roll and photos from the operation can be foundhere.

"After decades of rising homelessness before we took office, the number of people living on our streets is now going down thanks to Inside Safe's breakthrough in addressing the City's long-standing failures," said Mayor Bass."We have a long way to go, but I will not be deterred by those who want to hit 'pause' so they can read more studies. We are going to keep moving people off of the streets to save lives and make neighborhoods safer."

"We're encouraged to see dozens of Angelenos take that first step toward a safer, healthier, and more stable future," said Councilman Curren Price."This work is about people first, while also bringing relief to the surrounding community that has been impacted for some time. We've seen what's possible when outreach, housing, and services come together and while progress may not always be fast, we owe it to our communities to stay committed to this work."

Yesterday's successful operation - the 124th since the launch of the Inside Safe program three years ago - builds on Mayor Bass' citywide record of bringing tens of thousands of Angelenos indoors and sustaining a consecutive two-year decline in homelessness, a historic first for the nation's second-largest city.

Leading up to the operation, the Inside Safe Field Intervention Team worked closely with residents of the encampment, providing a range of services and building the trust needed to support their move into interim housing.

Beyond moving people off the streets, Mayor Bass is also focused on preventing individuals and families from becoming unhoused in the first place. Here's how her administration is tackling every stage in the fight to end homelessness:

  • Rolling out the first-ever encampment strategy, which has lowered overall homelessness for the first time in years, cut street homelessness by 17.5%, and led to the first drop in homeless mortality on record.

  • Accelerating the construction of more than 6,000 affordable housing units through Executive Directive 1.

  • Signing into law the first update to Los Angeles' Rent Stabilization Ordinance in 40 years.

  • Promoting innovative housing through LA4LA and creating more opportunities to build affordable housing on City-owned land.
