Gov. Rhoden Introduces Bill to Cut Property Taxes

PIERRE, S.D. - Today, Governor Larry Rhoden introduced his bill to cut property taxes, SB 96.

"South Dakotans deserve meaningful property tax relief, and this bill delivers it," said Governor Larry Rhoden. "It gives people in each county the freedom to decide what works best for them while keeping our economy strong, our taxes low, and opportunity wide open."

SB 96 gives counties the option to replace their share of property taxes with a half-cent sales tax. This tax cut would be referrable to a vote of the people, and the people could also initiate it for a vote in their local community. The proposal would also help counties draw more revenues from tourists and out-of-state visitors.

Governor Rhoden discussed this property tax cut in his State of the State Address, and you can find that footage here.

"This is a commonsense, conservative plan - not a mandate, but a choice. It gives South Dakotans a voice over where their taxes come from," said Governor Larry Rhoden.

Governor Rhoden will hold property tax town halls in the coming weeks to hear directly from constituents as he works to deliver effective property tax solutions. You can find more information about Governor Rhoden's plan to cut property taxes here.
