Virginia Department of Education announced today that Jonathan Marye, a Blacksburg High School world languages teacher, has been named the 2027 Region 6 Teacher of the Year, recognizing his dedication to preparing students for success in a globally connected world.
Marye teaches French in Montgomery County Public Schools, where he helps students develop communication skills, cultural awareness, and a deeper appreciation for international perspectives.
"We are incredibly proud to see Mr. Marye recognized as the Region 6 Teacher of the Year," said Montgomery County Public Schools Superintendent, Dr. Kelly Guempel. "This honor is a testament to his commitment to academic excellence and his unique ability to inspire students to reach their full potential. Mr. Marye embodies the very best of our district's mission, and we are fortunate to have such a dedicated educator leading our classrooms."
Through interactive lessons, cultural experiences, and authentic language practice, Marye encourages students to explore languages beyond the classroom and see themselves as global citizens.
"Mr. Marye is an exceptional educator who does far more than teach a language: he opens doors to the world," said Blacksburg High School Principal, Chris Stewart. "By weaving real-world connections into every lesson, he transforms French from a subject into a lifelong passion, inspiring his students to not only speak the language but to truly love the journey of learning."
He creates a classroom environment that encourages curiosity, collaboration, and confidence while helping students understand the importance of cultural exchange. As the Co-lead of the Southwest Virginia World Language Consortium, Marye has engaged with his peers across the region to share best practices and presented as numerous workshops.
"Jonathan Marye inspires students to become global citizens who understand and appreciate the diverse world around them," said Superintendent of Public Instruction Jenna Conway. "Learning another language opens doors to new cultures, new ideas, and new possibilities. His teaching helps students broaden their perspectives and develop skills that will benefit them throughout their lives."
Marye will represent Region 6, Southwest Virginia, in the statewide Virginia Teacher of the Year selection process.
