Overnight road treatment plan for east-central Georgia
Augusta, Ga. - The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) made good progress Wednesday clearing east-central Georgia routes. With help from sunny conditions, above-freezing temps, and a hot brine mixture, routes are drying faster than previously anticipated. However, we continue to strongly discourage travel overnight into Thursday morning.
I-16, I-20, and I-520 are mostly dry and clear. Georgia DOT crews are now treating all state routes in District 2 (east-central Georgia). Most state routes are drying. However, icy spots remain in shaded areas.
We had great success using our calcium brine mixture today. By adding calcium into our brine mixture of salt and water, we made the brine warmer, helping roads thaw quicker.
Crews will work through the night to continue treating roads. We are monitoring roads and bridges across the district, and we will be prepared to respond to any trouble spots we find. Georgia DOT will continue applying calcium brine tonight as needed. We will also continue plowing and salting.
As temperatures fall well below freezing overnight, black ice is likely to form. If you must travel and the road looks wet, assume it's icy and proceed accordingly.
Please continue to limit non-essential travel and give our crews space on the roads to do their jobs.
