Iowa Finance Authority Awards More Than $760,000 to Support Existing Permanent Supportive Housing Programs

DES MOINES - The Iowa Finance Authority (IFA) Board of Directors today awarded $767,653 to eight nonprofit providers to help sustain existing permanent supportive housing programs serving more than 400 households across seven Iowa counties. The awards help providers cover operating costs and maintain housing for individuals and families who have experienced chronic homelessness and have complex health and other support needs.

"A stable home gives Iowans who have repeatedly experienced homelessness a foundation to address health needs and other challenges," said IFA Director Debi Durham. "These awards help nonprofit providers sustain the housing and services residents need to break the cycle of homelessness, build more stable lives and contribute to stronger communities."

Permanent supportive housing combines permanent, affordable rental housing with access to case management and support services. This evidence-based approach helps residents remain housed while reducing reliance on emergency rooms and other costly public services.

The IFA Board of Directors created the Iowa Permanent Supportive Housing Fund to strengthen the operational stability of nonprofit providers and reduce the risk of residents returning to homelessness.

The awards include $617,653 in operating deficit relief grants and $150,000 in operating expense grants:

  • Operating Deficit Relief Grants: Help eligible providers cover operating deficits incurred during the prior fiscal year, up to $100,000.

  • Operating Expense Grants: Provide a one-time grant of up to $25,000 for each completed Federal Housing Tax Credit permanent supportive housing project or up to $50,000 for each National Housing Trust Fund permanent supportive housing project.

Awards will support existing housing in Clinton, Johnson, Muscatine, Polk, Pottawattamie, Scott and Woodbury counties. View the complete list of fiscal year 2027 Iowa Permanent Supportive Housing Fund awards here (33.21 KB) .xlsx .
