Administrative Assistant in Student Support Services

How long have you worked at FSU?

I have been a staff member at Frostburg State University since May 2003.

What 3 words can you use to describe FSU?

If I had to describe our campus in just three words, I would say compassion, excellence, and support.

List any professional or personal accomplishments we can celebrate with you.

One of my proudest accomplishments was receiving the President's Distinguished Staff Award in 2019 from Dr. Nowaczyk for helping establish the PAWS Pantry on campus. I was also honored to receive the University System of Maryland of Board of Regents Award. Both recognitions meant so much to me because they reflected the importance of helping students and giving back to the campus community.

What is your favorite thing about working at Frostburg State University?

My favorite part about working at FSU is working with students and seeing them grow throughout their college careers. Some students come from very difficult situations, yet they continue to push forward and work toward creating a better life for themselves. Watching their determination and success is truly inspiring and reminds me why I love what I do.

Is there a faculty and/or staff member that you consider a mentor? If so, who and why?

I have been blessed to have wonderful mentors throughout my time at FSU, including Holly Clark '08/M'10, Tamara Lowry '91/M'01, and Dr. Jay Hegeman '73/M'81, to name a few. Their support and guidance have helped shape both my professional and personal journey.

What advice would you give to current students?

One thing I always tell students is to never say never, because you never know what opportunities life may bring your way. I encourage them to challenge themselves, step outside of their comfort zones, and never be afraid to ask questions. The worst thing someone can say is no. I also remind students to enjoy the present and make memories while also making safe and responsible choices.

What is a cause near and dear to your heart and why?

Outside of work, there are several causes that are very close to my heart. Supporting Alzheimer's awareness is especially important to me because my mother is currently in the moderate stages of the disease. It is incredibly difficult watching someone you love lose pieces of themselves every day. I also care deeply about volunteering and giving back through organizations such as the Lions Club and the volunteer fire department.

What do you do for fun?

In my free time, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, especially at football games and tailgating events. My husband and I also love going to the mountains in Thomas, West Virginia, where we can disconnect, enjoy the peaceful surroundings, and spend some much-needed quality time together.
