Chief Digital Officer, Claritev
It's easy to talk about culture in the abstract. It's harder to point to something concrete and say, "That's what it looks like in action." But for Claritev, the Technology Leadership Program is a tangible example of culture creating measurable value.
With the healthcare environment under pressure from rising complexity and rapid technology change, innovation can't depend solely on having access to the right tools. It requires the right people to take action. That's why we intentionally focus on recruiting and retaining the talent needed to connect technology strategy to business outcomes.
What specific value does this create for Claritev? As a 45-year-old technology company, we need the infusion of next-generation thinking and skills paired with our deep healthcare industry expertise to continue evolving to meet the needs of our clients.
Here's a look at how the program operates and key differentiators that are driving long-term value for a strategic, sustainable technology team that's focused on creating innovative solutions to address healthcare's toughest challenges.
There are a few components to our technology program that have made it uniquely successful at developing leaders. These include recruiting the right people, establishing a structure built for cross-functional learning, and prioritizing executive commitment.
It starts with people: curious, adaptable people who are ready to learn and make an impact. Claritev's Technology Leadership Program puts recent graduates on a three-year path through the heart of our technology organization.
Associates rotate through three 12-month assignments in technology areas such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, data science, application development, cloud engineering, cybersecurity, agile project management, and more.
Along the way, they work with senior leaders who invest meaningful time in their growth. This approach has proven successful for the past 10 years and only becomes more important with the rapid rate of technology advancements seen across the healthcare industry.
The best thing a young professional can do early in their career is to go where they're needed. To do that well, they need exposure to different leaders and teams to develop a deep understanding of both the operational and technical aspects of our business.
That mindset is built into how this program runs. Associates move across departments, take on cross-functional projects, and get exposure to initiatives most people don't see until much later in their careers. This experience also builds confidence by giving these associates the opportunity to contribute at a high-level and make a real impact.
It works because the mentorship around them is real. Leaders across our business, not just in technology, treat these rotations as a shared responsibility rather than a box to check.
That kind of buy-in doesn't happen overnight. In the early years of this program, we had to build support across the company for the idea that developing talent deliberately was worth the investment. We know it's working because leaders across Claritev actively seek these program associates for their teams. They've seen the value these individuals can bring.
The excellent body of work that has come from the team has generated revenue, productivity gains with measurable financial impact, and even earned accolades in the form of industry awards, including the 2023 MedTech Breakthrough Award. Those results come to life in client-facing solutions like Pro Pricer®, which helped generate $441M of incremental savings over a two-year period. Associates in the program have also used their cross-functional exposure to make a real impact on internal efficiencies. This success would not be possible without an established culture that encourages creative problem solving.
Some of Claritev's current technology and operations leaders came up through this program. Colin Austria, now a Director on the infrastructure side, has spent the better part of a decade helping build the talent pipeline he once came through. Tallulah Daly, Assistant Vice President, and Bojana Zecivic, now a Vice President, are other examples of how the program has created opportunities for long-term leadership growth.
Tallulah put it well in a recent reflection on her nine years here: what has defined her career at Claritev has been movement. Having visibility into how different teams operate through the program helped foster a willingness (and ability) to go wherever the business needed her next; and the trust that each move would teach her something she could not have learned by standing still. That is direct feedback from a graduate of this program describing exactly what we hoped this experience would give her.
The mechanics, infrastructure, and tools themselves are only part of the job. The harder objective is getting the right people in the right places. That is especially important in healthcare.
At Claritev, our work sits at the intersection of healthcare, data, and technology. The challenges our clients navigate are complex, and technology can play an important role in bringing greater clarity to our industry.
When applied thoughtfully, technology can help make information more transparent, support better-informed decisions, and identify opportunities to improve affordability. But none of that happens automatically. It takes people who understand the technology, the data, and the business. That combination of technical depth and business judgment is exactly what this program is designed to develop.
Technology will change. The tools our teams use five years from now will look very different from the ones we use today. Having people who know how to evaluate those tools, challenge assumptions, understand the problem in front of them, and make thoughtful decisions about where technology can create meaningful value is what the Technology Leadership Program is really about.
The track record of this program, now a decade in the making, boasts brilliant leaders who came through our doors early in their careers and are staying to help shape what Claritev becomes next.
