KBS unveiled an innovative environmental initiative alongside its highly anticipated 80th Anniversary of Liberation concert featuring legendary Korean performer Cho Yong-pil. The broadcaster distributed free cheering sticks to all audience members at the performance, held on 6 September 2025 at Gocheok Sky Dome. This marked Cho Yong-pil's first solo stage appearance in 28 years, since his collaboration with KBS's "Big Show" in 1997.
The free concert, which opened all seats to the public at no charge, demonstrated its immense popularity when tickets sold out within just three minutes. Following the success of his 2023 concert at Jamsil Olympic Stadium where similar free cheering sticks were provided, this performance continues Cho Yong-pil's commitment to making his shows accessible to all generations. The event promises to showcase the living legend's masterpieces alongside a superband, creating what organisers describe as a "fantastic experience" enhanced by the collective glow of thousands of light sticks throughout the venue.
KBS's decision to collect and reuse the cheering sticks represents a thoughtful approach to large-scale event management, addressing environmental concerns whilst maintaining audience engagement. A spokesperson for the broadcaster explained that the initiative aims to create "a sustainable performance culture" that brings together entertainment excellence and environmental responsibility. The concert will be broadcast on KBS2 on 6 October 2025, allowing viewers across the nation to experience this landmark celebration of Korean culture and environmental consciousness.
