HHSC Highlights Resources for Veterans, Families During PTSD Awareness Month

HHSC is highlighting mental health resources available to service members, veterans and their families during PTSD Awareness Month in June.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that can develop after a traumatic event. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs reports that seven out of every 100 veterans nationwide will experience PTSD.

According to the 2025 National Veteran Suicide Prevention Annual Report (PDF), an average of 18 veterans die by suicide in the U.S. every day.

"PTSD can impact the lives of veterans and their families through re-experiencing or having intrusive thoughts of situations that occurred during military service," said Tim Keesling, director of the HHSC Office of Veteran Services Coordination. "Taking a little time to understand the condition and how to talk about it can help veterans reduce the stigma associated with seeking help."

Through a partnership with the Texas Veterans Commission, HHSC connects active and former service members and their families with local mental and behavioral health authorities through the Military Veteran Peer Network.
