SACRAMENTO - Assemblymember Dawn Addis (D-Morro Bay), released the following statement in response to the Central Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board approving permits necessary to extend operations of Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant under SB 846.

"I appreciate the expertise of the Central Coast Regional Water Board and its staff in their careful review and decisions regarding permits for operations of Pacific Gas and Electric's (PG&Es) Diablo Canyon Power Plant (DCPP). I thank the Board for its diligence and the members of the public who continue to engage in this process.

While I was not yet in the Legislature in 2022 when SB 846 extended DCPP's operations from 2025-2030, it is clear that our local community was largely left behind in negotiations. This is why I have worked and continue to work non-stop to rectify that situation. This includes leading legislation to secure additional school funding, advancing a $10 million budget proposal for our local public entities, and advocating for land conservation and public access.

Responsible energy policy requires centering the needs of local communities - particularly the communities hosting our State's only operating nuclear power plant. As PG&E seeks a 20-year extension of DCCP operations, critical issues of safety, mitigation, and affordability must be addressed transparently and thoroughly. I am working closely with the Administration, my legislative colleagues, and local stakeholders to ensure our region is fully represented in decisions about the plant's future. In any conversations around post-2030 extension, our community must be the top priority and centered in all negotiations."

Dawn Addis was elected to the California State Assembly in 2022 to represent the coastal 30th Assembly District, which includes San Luis Obispo, Monterey, and Santa Cruz Counties. She is the Chair of the Assembly Budget Subcommittee 1 on Health.
