We are thrilled to announce the general availability of the Nutanix Database Service (NDB) v2.7 release. NDB is the premier hybrid and multicloud database services platform for Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, EDB, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, MySQL, and MariaDB databases, trusted by large enterprises and government institutions worldwide.
NDB 2.7 introduces powerful new features designed to support AI workloads and manage databases across diverse environments. Let's dive into the key capabilities of NDB 2.7:
Support for AI Workloads and Expanded Database Functionality
Added PostgreSQL Extensions
NDB 2.7 introduces a suite of PostgreSQL extensions designed to bolster AI and machine learning applications:
Support for pgvector: This extension transforms PostgreSQL into a vector database, enabling the storage and search of vector data with high efficiency. It is a key PostgreSQL extension for customers developing AI applications like Large Language Models (LLMs) through retrieval-augmented generation (RAG). With pgvector, NDB users now have the native capabilities to build and run chatbots, copilots, multimodal AI, or recommendation systems.
Additional PostgreSQL Extensions: Along with pgvector, we are supporting pg_partman, pglogical, and pg_stat_statements, providing more robust tools for database partitioning, logical replication, and performance monitoring, respectively.
MongoDB Sharding: Provisioning and Decommissioning
We have introduced the capability to provision and decommission MongoDB sharded clusters directly through NDB, allowing customers to meet very demanding write requirements.
New Database and OS Versions
Database Engines: Including support for the latest version of MongoDB 7.0.15 and PostgreSQL 16.6, ensuring access to the latest database features and security enhancements.
Operating Systems: Rocky Linux 9.4 for PostgreSQL and Ubuntu 22.04, providing a broader range of options for deployment environments.
Enhanced Security
Security is paramount for us, and with NDB 2.7, we've made significant strides:
Database Encryption
Native Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) is now available for MongoDB and Thales CipherTrust (CTE) encryption support for both EDB EPAS and PostgreSQL Community editions, enhancing data security at rest.
Custom User Accounts
Customers can now define custom database and OS usernames for both MongoDB and PostgreSQL, providing them more control over their database environment's security posture.
The Nutanix community has been eagerly anticipating the release of NDB 2.7. Mohammad Ali, Director of Database and BI Practice at Technologent, shared their excitement about NDB 2.7: "We are very enthusiastic about the prospect of integrating NDB 2.7 into our customers' operations. The support for data at rest encryption with Thales CTE for both EDB and community PostgreSQL, along with MongoDB's native transparent data encryption (TDE), are of key importance to our database security strategy. The new capability to define custom database and OS usernames for MongoDB and PostgreSQL ensures compliance with our stringent security policies."
Expanded Multicloud Capabilities
NDB on NC2 on Microsoft Azure
Building on the existing support for database engines running on NDB on the Nutanix Cloud Clusters (NC2) platform on AWS, NDB now supports the same database engines on NC2 on Azure.
With NDB on NC2 in Azure, customers can now deploy NDB on Azure bare-metal instances and extend the database services capabilities it provides to single instance and high-availability database deployments running on NC2 in Azure. These capabilities can be applied in an identical fashion across your database estate, including on AWS, Azure and on-premises.
Database engines supported by NDB running on NC2 in Azure include Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, EDB, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, MySQL, and MariaDB. All combinations of compatible operating systems and database engines are equally supported by NDB in Azure and on-premises.
This Azure addition provides customers with even greater flexibility to implement robust hybrid and multicloud database strategies. For more details, check out the NDB on Azure Marketplace blog post.
