SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV - On Saturday, May 9, 2026, Shepherd University held its 153rd Commencement Ceremony, conferring degrees to students who graduated in December 2025 and May 2026.
The morning ceremony recognized 67 candidates for master's and doctoral degrees, while the afternoon ceremony recognized 503 candidates for bachelor's degrees.
Austin J. Slater Jr. '76, vice-chair of the Shepherd University Board of Governors and president of the Shepherd University Foundation, served as the graduate commencement speaker and honorary degree recipient. During his address, Slater praised graduates for their dedication and perseverance, calling the achievement a major milestone and encouraging them to continue growing in the years ahead.
"My first challenge is for you to rededicate yourself to continued education. In other words, I encourage you to nurture relentless learning," Slater said. "Although you feel you have reached an important destination today, and you have, the criticality of continued learning has never been more important."
"My second challenge-work continually on being a good person," he continued. "We need more good people in this world. One of my favorite mottos is 'Work Hard and Be Nice.' Simple, profound, and instructive."
Speaking to undergraduate students during the afternoon ceremony, Tyson Bagent '22, Chicago Bears quarterback, reflected on the impact Shepherd has had on his life-from childhood through his collegiate career and into his role as a professional football player-emphasizing the lasting connection graduates share with the University.
"When I stand here today, I'm not speaking as someone who went here, I'm speaking as someone who is because of this place. And that's something every one of you shares in your own way," Bagent said. "No matter where you go next, no matter how far you travel, no matter what you accomplish, you will always carry Shepherd with you."
Shepherd University President Dr. Mary J.C. Hendrix expressed gratitude to the Class of 2026 for their senior class gift-a weather shelter on West Campus. The 2026 ceremony marks Dr. Hendrix's final commencement, as she prepares to retire in June after 10 years of service to the University.
