AUSTIN, Texas - Propelled by top academic programs across business, engineering and computer science, The University of Texas at Austin maintained its No. 1 ranking among public universities in Texas and No. 7 ranking among public universities nationally in the U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges rankings for 2026. UT holds at No. 30 nationally among both public and private universities.
Of the 37 UT undergraduate programs evaluated, 24 rank in the top 10 among all universities nationally. Six programs rank in the top 5: Accounting, Finance and Marketing in the McCombs School of Business and Petroleum, Chemical and Civil Engineering in the Cockrell School of Engineering. Three programs returned to the top 10 this year: Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science Theory and Biomedical Engineering. A total of 32 programs are ranked No.1 in Texas.
Combined, UT has 76 undergraduate and graduate programs ranked in the top 10 among public and private institutions. U.S. News released its graduate rankings in April.
"Our commitment to the people of Texas is to deliver an uncompromising standard of academic excellence," said UT President Jim Davis. "That excellence is driving the highest demand and student performance in our University's history, and today's rankings validate our performance. I am grateful to our faculty and staff for their dedication to our students and their academic success."
According to U.S. News survey methodology, schools with the highest overall rankings provided ample classroom resources for students and faculty, maintained high graduation and retention rates, conferred a high rate of degrees, and produced graduates who entered the workforce with manageable debt and competitive starting salaries.
During the 2024-2025 academic year, which ended in August, UT set new records for its four-year graduation rate at 75.7% and first-year retention rate at 97.1%. The University conferred 15,963 degrees, also a new high.
In addition to individual programs evaluated by U.S. News, UT continues to be the best university in Texas for veterans and ranks No. 7 in the nation for veterans among public universities. UT also ranks No. 9 for most innovative among public universities nationally and has the No. 4 study abroad program.
