Commission and EU countries discuss latest developments in the Middle East

In a meeting of the Oil Coordination Group held today, representatives from the European Commission and EU countries informed on the situation concerning the EU's oil security of supply, with special focus on jet fuel and diesel, in view of the ongoing disruptions in the Middle East. The meeting took place against the backdrop of the European Council session addressing the challenges of rising energy prices to the EU's competitiveness.

EU countries reported that the security of oil supply remains stable for the moment, thanks to the diversification efforts, despite being affected by fluctuations in global oil prices. It was also raised that the oil security of supply will also depend on the duration and escalation of the conflict. Member States are prepared, and oil stocks remain at a high level. In case of a prolonged disruption of energy flows through the strait of Hormuz, the EU's security of oil supply will be reassessed.

The Group further exchanged on EU Member States' contribution to the International Energy Agency's (IEA) collective action to release 400-million-barrels of oil stocks, as well as on its impact on the global markets.

The Oil Coordination Group highlighted the importance to keep the close coordination and transparent exchange of information. The Commission will continue monitoring and assessing the situation, and keep regular communication with EU countries, IEA and market participants.
