On March 17, 2026, Elmedin Konaković, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina, held a bilateral meeting with Oana Țoiu, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Romania. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the conference commemorating the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the Executive Secretariat of the Central European Initiative (CEI) in Trieste.
At the outset of their discussion, both ministers acknowledged the friendly relations between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Romania, noting that there are no open issues between the two countries. This year also marks three decades since the establishment of diplomatic ties, which further underscores the continuity of their cooperation and mutual trust.
The ministers focused on strengthening economic cooperation and the development of joint projects in science, culture, technology, sports, and education. They discussed the creation of cooperation protocols and programs that would provide a framework for more intensive collaboration and the exchange of experiences. Minister Konaković briefed Minister Tiou on the internal political situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the country's foreign policy goals. He emphasized that the path to European Union (EU) membership remains a strategic priority for Bosnia and Herzegovina. He expressed gratitude to Romania for its unwavering support for this European aspiration, highlighting the significance of Romanian political engagement in strengthening the reform processes within his country. In this context, he particularly noted Romania's commitment to the stability and security of Bosnia and Herzegovina, especially through its long-term involvement in the EUFOR Althea mission, including commanding the mission in 2025.
The interlocutors exchanged views on the necessity of enhancing economic connections among the countries of the Western Balkans and the broader region, emphasizing that such cooperation is crucial for accelerating their integration into the European Union. They also addressed cooperation within Euro-Atlantic initiatives, with particular emphasis on their collective contribution to the security and stability of the European region.
Minister Țoiu reaffirmed Romania's strong and unwavering support for Bosnia and Herzegovina and other Western Balkan countries as they pursue EU membership, stressing the importance of continuing the reform process and Euro-Atlantic integration.
