On January 5-11 fighter aircraft of the NATO Air Policing Detachment were scrambled in response to international flight regulation violations once.
On January 5 NATO fighter aircraft conducting the Air Policing Mission in the Baltic states were alerted in response to one Su-30SM flying from Kaliningrad to mainland Russia via international airspace. Its onboard transponder was switched off, the crew had no flight plan but it was maintaining radio communication with the regional air traffic control centre. NATO Air Policing fighter aircraft also identified and escorted one AN-26 which was flying through international airspace from mainland Russia to Kaliningrad. Its onboard transponder was switched off, the crew was maintaining radio communication but had no pre-filed flight plan.
