Board of Commissioners and Sheriff to Hold Public Meetings Seeking Community Input on Future of Jail

ASHTABULA COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS AND ASHTABULA COUNTY SHERIFF TO HOLD PUBLIC MEETINGS SEEKING COMMUNITY INPUT ON FUTURE OF COUNTY JAIL

Jefferson, Ohio - The Ashtabula County Board of Commissioners invites residents to participate in two public meetings on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, at 12:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. in the Ashtabula County Commissioners' Conference Room, located at 25 West Jefferson St., Jefferson, Ohio 44047. These meetings are an opportunity for community members to provide input on the future of the Ashtabula County Jail and discuss potential solutions to the challenges facing the county's correctional system.

The Board of Commissioners, in partnership with the Ashtabula County Sheriff's Office, is exploring options to improve jail conditions, enhance public safety, and modernize corrections infrastructure. This includes the potential pursuit of state funding through the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction's (ODRC) House Bill 2 Jail Grant program. If awarded, these funds could support efforts to address overcrowding, upgrade facilities, and improve rehabilitation services.

"As we consider the future of our county jail, we want to hear directly from residents about their concerns, priorities, and ideas," said Board President J.P. Ducro. "This is a decision that impacts public safety, economic development, taxpayer investment and the entire criminal justice system, so community input is critical."

Board Vice-President Casey Kozlowski emphasized the broader implications of the project, stating, "A well-planned correctional facility can improve public safety, create better outcomes for those entering the system, and ensure a more efficient use of county resources. We need to have a conversation with the community about the best path forward."

Commissioner Kathryn Whittington highlighted the importance of public engagement, adding, "We are at a pivotal moment in shaping the future of corrections in Ashtabula County. We encourage residents to share their perspectives so we can make informed decisions that benefit our entire community."

Ashtabula County Sheriff William Niemi also underscored the need for community dialogue, stating, "The challenges we face with our current jail impact public safety, law enforcement, and the entire justice system. We welcome input from residents as we work toward a solution that meets our county's needs."
