Ranking Member Scott's Statement on Republicans' Latest Health Care Proposal

WASHINGTON - Ranking Member Robert C. "Bobby" Scott (VA-03), House Committee on Education and Workforce, released the following statement following the release of House Republicans' latest health care proposal.

"House Republicans' idea of a 'new' health care proposal to lower costs essentially consists of a handful of decades-old proposals that have proven not to work. Specifically, the Republican proposal would expand access to risky Association Health Plans that don't have to cover essential health benefits, and raise premiums for people remaining in the Marketplace; prevent federal and state governments from regulating stop loss insurance and invite nefarious practices that could hurt consumers; and fund cost-sharing reductions, which will decrease the amount of financial assistance available for many consumers. What House Republicans are proposing would undermine the protections guaranteed under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and undo all the progress we have made to protect access to health care.

"Moreover, the Republican bill will do nothing to lower costs for millions of Americans who are now facing skyrocketing premium increases. Republicans have refused to extend the ACA enhanced premium tax credits all year, and that inexcusable inaction continues with this bill. Under the House Republicans' proposal, Americans will be forced to pay more and get less.

"The best way to reduce health care costs for millions of Americans right now is Leader Jeffries' discharge petition, a clean three-year extension of the ACA premium tax credits. We only need a handful of reasonable Republicans to sign onto the petition and bring it to the floor for a vote."
