Costa Rica strengthens its cybersecurity with support from the European Union

The Ministry of Science, Innovation, Technology and Telecommunications of Costa Rica (MICITT) has received a first package of specialized equipment.

This delivery is part of a European Union cooperation project, led by FIAP (with technical support from Spain's National Cryptologic Center (CCN)), and is aimed at strengthening the Security Operations Center (SOC) and CSIRT-CR through the establishment of a cyber intelligence laboratory and a digital forensics laboratory. These facilities seek to enhance the prevention, detection, and response to cybersecurity incidents, as well as improve cybercrime investigations and the strategic analysis of digital threats.

During the event, the Vice Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation of MICITT, Orlando Vega, highlighted that this cooperation contributes to consolidating the country's technical and institutional capacities in cybersecurity.

The European Union Ambassador, Pierre-Louis Lempereur, stated that this cooperation represents investments in the future of Costa Rica's digital sovereignty and resilience. "By establishing cyber intelligence and forensic analysis laboratories, we are equipping Costa Rican institutions with the tools to effectively prevent, analyze, and respond to cyberattacks," he emphasized.

Meanwhile, the Director of the Economic Development and Environment Area at FIAP, Sonsoles Mories, stressed that "we maintain a firm commitment to Costa Rica to continue working together to strengthen its institutions. This delivery of equipment constitutes a key step in reinforcing the country's cybersecurity against attacks that may affect public institutions and generate operational, economic, and reputational impacts."

The project also involves the Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ) and the National Intelligence and Security Directorate (DIS), institutions that will strengthen their capabilities through the use of specialized tools for digital evidence analysis and the generation of strategic intelligence.

With this initiative, Costa Rica continues to advance in strengthening its cybersecurity infrastructure and in fostering interinstitutional coordination to address increasingly sophisticated threats in the digital environment.
