WASHINGTON - Today, the Committee on Education and Workforce Democrats forced Committee Republicans to take a vote on the President's plans to dismantle the Department of Education (ED).
H. Res. 237 would require the President and Secretary of Education to share information with Congress regarding the Administration's efforts to dismantle ED and its potential impact on students nationwide. In accordance with House Rules, if the Resolution of Inquiry was marked up in the Committee within fourteen legislative days of its introduction, the full House could vote on the matter.
Without exception, Committee Republicans refused support this request for information on how the Administration intends to dismantle the Department while still fulfilling its essential duties to schools, teachers, and students, such as enforcing civil rights, supervising student loans, and providing Title I funds to schools in need.
"Under the Constitution, we have a responsibility to ensure the Executive Branch faithfully implements the laws written by Congress," said Ranking Member Robert C. "Bobby" Scott. "We cannot bury our heads in the sand and allow this Administration to undermine almost every program our constituents rely on."
