GW English Professor Publishes Book on the Language of Jane Austen

Maria Frawley, a professor of English, has published "Jane Austen in 50 Words."The book examines the distinctive language woven throughout Austen's novels, offering insight into terms such as "gentility," "delicacy," "indolence" and "impertinence."

Through 50 concise and accessible entries, Frawley explores how the meanings of these words have shifted over time. She offers new perspectives on Austen's world, giving readers the tools to better understand her novels individually and as a whole. Frawley's research interests include nineteenth-century British literature, social history and print culture.
