Lithuania Approves the 2026 State Budget with Record-High Defence Spending at 5.38% of GDP

Today, the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania approved the 2026 State budget, featuring an unprecedented allocation for national defence, amounting to 5.38 % of the country's gross domestic product (GDP) - the highest level in the nation's history.

This historic defence spending commitment reflects Lithuania's response to the current geopolitical environment and its steadfast dedication to national and regional security. The budget package also balances security needs with social priorities, including increased funding for public sector wages, pensions, and social support programmes.

"By allocating 5.38 % of GDP to defence, Lithuania demonstrates unwavering commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty and contributing to collective security within the NATO framework," said Minister of Finance Kristupas Vaitiekūnas. "At the same time, we have ensured continued investment in social welfare and economic stability."

The budget received broad support in the Seimas, passing with 80 votes in favour, 39 against, and 7 abstentions. In addition to defence, the budget provides for enhanced social benefits and sustained development of public services.

This budget decision reinforces Lithuania's role as a proactive NATO ally, responding to evolving security challenges while maintaining a balanced approach to national policy.
