The Lincoln Police Department (LPD) today announced that beginning September 1, the Southwest Team will conduct an enforcement project focused on vehicle and pedestrian traffic in downtown and surrounding neighborhoods. Officers will work overtime to keep downtown streets safe.
Downtown Lincoln is one of the city's busiest districts, and the large number of vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists and scooters sharing the road creates unique safety challenges. Officers have observed violations such as drivers failing to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, excessive speeding, distracted driving and vehicles blocking intersections. These behaviors increase the risk of crashes and endanger both drivers and pedestrians.
This increased enforcement is funded through a grant provided by the Nebraska Department of Transportation Highway Safety Office.
LPD urges all drivers to use extra caution in downtown Lincoln, obey speed limits and remain alert for pedestrians and cyclists. Likewise, pedestrians are encouraged to use marked crosswalks, obey traffic signals and avoid distractions while crossing streets.
