Upper Montara Mountain Trail Closure, Jan 21–23

Emergency Repairs on Critical Access Road Vital to Multi-Agency Emergency Communications Facility for Coastside
January 15, 2025

San Mateo County Parks, in collaboration with multiple agencies, will repair sections of North Peak Access Road on Montara Mountain, Tues., Jan. 21 through Thurs., Jan. 23. The project is solely focused on improving the road surface and will not remove vegetation along the road or elsewhere on the mountain.

The North Peak of Montara Mountain is a critical resource site relied upon by emergency responders and telecommunications providers, California State Parks, San Mateo County, and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE). Recently, CAL FIRE inspected the road and identified unsafe conditions that require immediate attention. According to current weather forecast, the next week presents the ideal time for repairs to occur. Collaborating agencies agree there is an urgency in completing repairs before rain returns to ensure first responders are adequately equipped to address emergencies and provide public safety.

Montara Mountain includes parkland and trails managed by California State Parks, Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and San Mateo County Parks. To ensure the safety of equipment operators, hikers and cyclists during the repairs, Montara Mountain Trail in San Mateo County's San Pedro Valley Park will be closed at junction 14, Jan 21-23 (see map below) . Other closures in area include:

  • Alta Vista Trail at North Peak Access Road in Rancho Corral de Tierra
  • All trails in McNee Ranch State Park

The Midcoast Community Council will receive a project briefing at its Jan. 22. See how to attend the meeting in person or online at https://midcoastcommunitycouncil.org.
