Executive Vice-President Virkkunen in the US for G20 Ministerial meetings

Starting today until Wednesday, 2 September, the European Commission will be represented by Henna Virkkunen, Executive Vice-President for Tech Sovereignty, Security and Democracy and Valdis Dombrovskis, Commissioner for Economy and Productivity, Implementation and Simplification at the G20 Ministerial meetings in North Carolina, United States of America.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, Executive Vice-President Virkkunen will take part in the G20 Innovation Ministerial Meeting in Raleigh-Durham, where technology and digital ministers will discuss how AI and emerging technologies can drive economic growth and innovation. They will also discuss supply chains and skills, as well as scientific advancements and investments.

The Executive Vice-President will underline Europe's ambition to lead in AI through major investment in computing infrastructure and deployment, including €200 billion mobilised under InvestAI, 19 AI Factories and upcoming AI Gigafactories. She will stress that trust and innovation must go hand in hand, and call for greater international cooperation and interoperability to avoid regulatory fragmentation and support companies operating across borders.

Over the two days, the Executive Vice-President will hold a series of bilateral meetings, including with Michael Kratsios, Director of the US Office of Science and Technology Policy, Onoda Kimi, Minister of Science and Technology Policy of Japan, Mehmet Fatih Kacır, Minister of Industry and Technology of Türkiye, Jitin Prasada, Minister of Electronics and Information Technology of India, and Marcelo Ebrard Casaubon, Secretary of Economy of Mexico.
