Roadrunners head to Los Angeles for NCAA Super Regional showdown with UCLA

JUNE 6, 2025 -After a decisive victory over Kansas State and twice conquering the No. 2 Texas Longhorns to claim the NCAA Austin Regional Championship, UTSA Baseball now has its sights set on the College World Series. No. 15 UCLA is the lone team standing in the Roadrunners' way.

UTSA will travel to Los Angeles to take on the Bruins in a best-of-three NCAA Super Regional series that starts on Saturday, June 7, at 6 p.m. CT. The second game of the series will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 8. A third game, if necessary, will be held at a time yet to be determined on Monday, June 9. The winner of this Super Regional series will advance to the NCAA Men's College World Series in Omaha, where college baseball's national champion will be crowned over the course of an 8-team tournament from June 13-23.

Though UTSA's triumph in Austin shocked many college baseball fans across the country, no one in the Roadrunners' dugout was surprised. Reaching the College World Series has been the team's expressed goal throughout the 2025 campaign under the leadership of sixth-year head coach Pat Hallmark. UTSA (47-13) notched wins over prestigious programs like Texas and Texas A&M early in the season before racing out to a huge lead in the American Athletic Conference standings and clinching the league's regular-season championship with two full weeks left on the schedule.

UTSA's regular season showing was impressive enough for the Roadrunners to earn an at-large bid in the NCAA Tournament. The Roadrunners were assigned to the Austin Regional, which meant a rematch with the SEC regular-season champion Texas Longhorns was inevitable. The UTSA baseball team was determined to prove that its 8-7 upset of the Longhorns on March 18 was no fluke.

On Friday, May 31, night one of the regional, Norris McClure and James Taussig both hit home runs as UTSA hammered the Kansas State Wildcats by the score of 10-2, setting up a Saturday night matchup with Texas. The winner would of that game would advance to the regional final.

The Longhorns jumped to an early 6-1 lead on Saturday night to the joy of the sold-out home crowd at Austin's UFCU Disch-Falk Field, but the resilient Roadrunners never relinquished. They notched four runs in the fifth inning, three more in the sixth inning and never looked back on their way to a sensational 9-7 victory.

UTSA and Texas faced off again the following night in the Austin Regional final, but the script went nothing like Saturday's. The Roadrunners piled runs on the Longhorns early in the game and had amassed a 7-0 lead by the third inning. No comeback dramatics were needed. Seven runs were all the offensive production they would need as UTSA's pitchers stifled Texas for most of the contest. Despite a late surge from the Longhorns, UTSA held on for a statement-making 7-4 win over the No. 2 team in the nation. Two days after celebrating its first-ever postseason win, UTSA Baseball was reveling in its first-ever NCAA regional championship.

Now, the Roadrunners are two wins away from achieving their goal and making the university's first-ever appearance in the College World Series (the baseball equivalent of reaching the College Football Playoff or the Final Four in basketball). To get there, however, UTSA will have to contend with a talented UCLA squad that shared the regular-season championship of the Big Ten Conference with Oregon. The Bruins (45-16) pulverized the competition at the Los Angeles Regional, defeating Fresno State 19-4, Arizona State 11-5 and besting UC Irvine 8-5 in the regional final.
